About the Role
At Headway, trust is foundational. Patients trust us to connect them with quality providers. Providers trust us to handle the complexity of insurance. And payers trust us to maintain clinical and coding integrity across our entire network.
As a Staff Product Designer for Provider, you'll be the design anchor for a new pod focused on building the infrastructure that upholds this trust. You'll lead the design vision and execution for how we support clinical excellence, ensure coding accuracy, and provide meaningful feedback to providers—all while maintaining the provider experience that makes Headway different.
This role sits at the intersection of complex regulatory requirements, operational scale, and provider experience. You'll design systems that handle hundreds of clinical reviews, support thousands of provider interactions, and deliver feedback that helps providers continuously improve and elevate their practice.
What makes this unique: You'll need to hold multiple mental models simultaneously (clinical standards, operational workflows, provider experience, payer requirements) and design systems that serve all of them without compromise. The spike we're looking for is domain fluency + systems thinking—the ability to become fluent in clinical standards and review processes to design solutions that actually work under real-world constraints. This is about finding clarity in constraint, designing operational systems that feel humane and supportive, and understanding that "the user" is the entire ecosystem.
In this role, you'll:
Own the design vision and deliver high-craft solutions
- Lead design across clinical review infrastructure, provider feedback systems, and coding accuracy tools
- Translate dense regulatory requirements and clinical standards into intuitive, human-centered experiences that make complex requirements feel manageable
- Design for multiple audiences: internal operations teams, providers receiving feedback, and payers evaluating our network
- Define the experience vision for supportive education and improvement flows that help providers elevate their practice
- Establish and maintain a high bar for visual and interaction design that makes systems feel approachable and helpful
Build systems, partner strategically, and mentor
- Develop reusable patterns for complex workflows and contribute to our design system (Helix)
- Work deeply with product, engineering, clinical operations, and standards teams
- Connect the dots across all of provider experience—designing solutions that span multiple touchpoints when needed
- Collaborate with provider experience designers to ensure feedback systems feel genuinely supportive and educational
- Mentor other designers and model effective cross-functional partnership
You'll be a great fit if you:
Have deep experience building complex systems with strong craft
- 8+ years as a product designer, with experience designing for operational tools, regulated workflows, or multi-sided platforms
- You've shipped products that balance competing constraints—user needs, business requirements, regulatory obligations
- Your visual and interaction design work is polished and precise
- You know that good craft isn't decorative—it's the grammar that makes complex systems understandable and usable
Thrive in complexity and ambiguity
- You're comfortable with incomplete requirements and use design to help clarify and define the problem
- You can scope work appropriately, knowing when to prototype quickly and when to invest in thorough exploration
- You balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution—you can develop the vision and then roll up your sleeves to execute it
Collaborate effectively with accountability beyond your pod
- You work well with cross-functional partners and can translate between different disciplines
- You communicate clearly in writing, in design artifacts, and in conversation
- You feel accountable to the entire provider experience, not just your pod—you're willing to push on and help drive work across the full provider journey when it's needed
Care about the mission
- You're motivated by work that has real impact on people's access to healthcare
- You want to help build systems that make it easier for providers to do their best work while meeting the standards that keep patients safe
